Boston Austen Book Club Summer Meeting - Sun, Sep 22 - Bridget Jones's Diary and BJ: Edge of Reason

BABC Summer Meeting: Bridget Jones's Diary and Bridget Jones: the Edge of Reason

Summer is almost over! That went by SO FAST! I hope yours was a good one. I'm ending the busiest summer of my life with great fanfare: the Summer Meeting of the Boston Austen Book Club. This meeting will be on Sunday, September 22 at 2pm at the Pleasant CafĂ© in Roslindale. We will meet to discuss “Bridget Jones’s Diary” and “Bridget Jones: the Edge of Reason.”

Bridget Jones, Jane Austen, and Women's Literature

Both BJD and BJ:EOR are sort-of spinoffs, plot-wise, of Pride and Prejudice and Persuasion, respectively. We’ll discuss that aspect of the books, and also how they “spored their own gender” of books AKA spurred their own genre of books (you’ll get the joke after you read Edge of Reason), namely “Chick Lit.” From there we can discuss those books and chick lit in general in the context of the history of women’s literature and Jane Austen. Also, of course, we will discuss the books themselves, independent of everything else.

Hope you can make it! The good thing about these two books is that they are really quick reads. If you haven’t gotten to them yet, there’s still plenty of time!
