A Night Time Tour of the Porch Container Garden Featuring Recycled/Upcycled Furniture, Faerie Garden Tchotchke, Herbs, Perennials, and Annuals

This cute and bright outdoor carpet is from Ikea and was only $7. The chair on the left is from National Warehouse, $6. The other is from the trash somewhere in Chestnut Hill (fancy, rich trash!). That cute little table is from my roommate. I love this little "vignette" of seating area.

Container Garden Trellis made from Re-purposed Clothing Rack

Look at the trellis made from recycled/repurposed materials that I created. Thing's crazy! And sadly not put to good use this summer because my lazy butt didn't get to planting the beans I bought. Next season though. Let me tell you what it is though:

Recycled Coat Rack Trellis

  • Rubbermaid draw with holes drilled in bottom, filled with garden soil/potting soil mix.
  • Three 6"+ containers with their bottoms cut out and firmly stuck into the top of the drawer-container, so as to add height, filled with potting soil.
  • The frame of a clothing rack, duct taped with leopard print duct tape from Dollar Tree
  • A pest-resistant mulch layer on top.

Last year I did tomatoes and peppers and it was mildly fruitful. Next year I want to do chive and marigold on the bottom layer around, to help with pest resistance, and then beans in the container, to grow up the trellis.

A Weed Is in the Eye of the Beholder

I believe these succulent looking "weeds" are purslane. I didn't plant them (hence the "weed" category) but I like them so I'm letting them grow. I like adding tchochke to my outdoor plants, especially in the earlier part of the growing season, so there's plenty to see in a container, no matter the season.

Faerie Gardens Are The Best

Ohhhhh. Hiiii! My little fairy garden! Mushroom was a gift from an old neighbor. She was a sweet lady. The plant is a blue salvia. The Little Red Riding Hood and Princess and Mice in the Nutshell are little trinkets from my childhood. Love them in the garden now.

The Overall Effect of the Porch Garden at Night

And here is the whole thing! It's like having two extra rooms: outdoor dining room and outdoor living room! The lights were purchased on clearance from CVS after Christmas and my friend helped me rig them up last summer. They stay up year round to light the porch.

Hope you enjoyed the night time tour of my urban garden with all my containers of herbs, perennials, and annuals.
