Welcome to the Porch Garden! The porch garden is a point of pride for me. Not only is it a lovely space to enjoy during the nice weather, but I really unleash my Supreme Bargain Huntress prowess to outfit the entire things. This part of the apartment is a real point of pride for me.

Taking Care of an Urban Porch Garden

I had neglected it for a while this summer. It was there in structure and there was a semblance of its potential. But it needed a good sweeping, mopping, weeding and watering plus slight rearranging and enhancing.

Unfortunately in the start of the growing season, I was overwhelmed with work, regular social life, and this online course I am taking for a certificate program -- which I don't need, I just can get it for free and being a nerd I am enriching my brain with a 6th academic credential, because women's studies and music minors, education and English majors, and a poetry graduate degree just wasn't enough. At least they're all in highly lucrative fields -- er wait. No. Opposite. Which is a perfect segue to my bohemian budget adventures for the back porch!

Pretty much everything is reclaimed, trash picked, left behind, or re-purposed. Or if not, I purchased it at a discount store of some sort. I also love having little knick-knacks in the pots to create a faerie garden effect. It adds a magical touch..

Tips for Container Gardening and Growing Flowers

I take each little plant in a pot or tray from the garden store, and put them alone in a bigger planter so they can bloom bigger and have a lot of greenery and flowers. If you can wait, buy the ones that haven't blossomed yet so you can have them alive and thriving for you in your garden longer.

Plant a Few Pretty Perennials in Containers to Look Forward to Seeing Each Spring

The coral bells with the owl is from one plant purchased a while ago, maybe 5 years ago? I transplanted it from my old garden and potted it up. It keeps growing and now takes up three containers. It grows well, is  one of the first to show up after the frost, and is really pretty so I'm glad I've got 3 of them now. Keep an eye on all you perennials, and when they're outgrowing their container, you can either split them and add to a new container, or move to a biger container. I prefer the splitting method, so that I can have more plants!

Dollar Tree Containers for Herb Gardening

I drilled holes in the bottom of the purple buckets to make them potting containers for herbs. That's my favorite color purple and they were only a dollar from Dollar Tree.

The basil is from this year, since it's an annual herb in this gardening zone. The sage is maybe 3 years old now.

Use Vertical Space and Grid-Line Storage Shelves to Have More Space in Your Porch Garden

This was a shelving unit I used at my old apartment. It's perfect for container gardening because the sun can go through the wire to the other pots on the bottom and you can build up the vertical space for more planting.

Below here is all lemon balm. I think there were other things growing in the two on the floor last year and then when they died, the lemon balm, which a very opportunistic plant, took hold. So I've grouped them together in a kind of quarantine. Lemon balm is delicious in tea, soup, pasta and especially homemade vinaigrette.

The plant stand and big green container came from my mom's old garden and I got them when she moved. The other containers were left behind by neighbors and the landlord's wife and I reclaimed them for active use again. My nana painted the ceramic mouse and my dad painted the tiger. I like their spirit watching over the garden.
