Part 10, cont - Two Contemporary Poems, "Lune", sounds

LUNE - SOUNDS

The sounds in this poem help to convey its function. Reading the poem aloud, I could hear the importance of the short vowel sounds and the long vowel sounds. Then I noted each vowel sound (illustration 9). That is when I noticed that short vowel sounds dominate in the beginning 3 lines, middle 2 and very end of the poem. The back and forth to long and short vowel sounds occur more often in between those sections. This brings a meditative, or trance-like feel. The repeated short sounds build up tension that the long vowels then release. The very last words release the tension with two long vowels “a bowl” punctuated by the short “of milk”.
