Ye Olde Bloggens are re-posts of old blogs
by Bridget Eileen - Writer in Providence, Rhode Island

The following post was originally posted on one of Bridget Eileen’s old blogs: In the Pines, Neophyte Poetics, Bridget Eileen’s Commonplace Book, Dreaming Bridge Designs or A Vegetarian Notebook. They aren’t all fancy with photos and subheadings and search descriptions, or even that much content, sometimes. They’re here for posterity, because it’s fun to read the archives!

"One Hundred Things to Rejoice About" - A Journal Prompt

I want to dedicate an entry to rejoicing--from the littlest things to the big, happy things--the reasons why we keep going, even when it's hard. (Things have been hard, lately.)

100 Things to Rejoice About:
  1. The smell of just-about-to-rain: apparently doesn't occur in places without humidity. My 4, 8 and 8 year old cousins in San Fran had never smelled just-about-to-rain until they came to visit two and a half weeks ago
  2. Popham Beach
  3. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
  4. The Portland Museum of Art
  5. Chris Cornell
  6. The 50% off clearance sale at Old Navy (especially because I get another 20% off of that)
  7. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
  8. Wine from Spain
  9. Very Sexy Bras from Vickies
  10. My dog Daisy
  11. Tetris
  12. Matt Damon: even though he's cheesy, he's still not as cheesy as Ben Affleck and much hotter
  13. The Boston Public Garden and Boston Common
  14. Martinis from the top of the Eastland
  15. Snood
  16. Snorkeling in Bermuda
  17. On Point with Tom Ashbrook: many thanks especially to Hilary for her production efforts
  18. The Museum of Fine Arts
  19. Flip flops
  20. Colin Firth
  21. The tropical fish of the Caribbean
  22. Swimming pools
  23. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
  24. Going to the Maine oceanside with people from the Midwest: like being an ambassador to the beach. "That's a Razor Clam. That's a mussel shell. They're delicious. Like chicken, only better."
  25. Buddhism
  26. 30 Rock: It's on right now. Every time I see it, I just think "Oh sh*t, is this show funny!"
  27. Butterflies
  28. Cook's on Orr's Island
  29. The lovely array of flat shoes they're designing these days
  30. Super strong magnets: I bought three from Red Dragon for Cecilia's Fourth Birthday Magical Box of Things. They're magic. When you put one in the palm of your hand and then stick the other two under your hand at the same polarities, it flips the magnet over in your hand. Like magic. Cecilia and I were impressed with our magicalness.
  31. Speaking of magic, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is next on the list
  32. The fact that every turn on the roads of Maine yields a pretty view.
  33. The 1989 black Caprice Classic I saw in Dorchester today that was awesome on its own (mint condition) but was awesomer because it had a UMaine Black Bear Maine license plate.
  34. The architecture of Lewiston Maine's old buildings
  35. Flamingos
  36. All My Children
  37. Especially Erika Kane's flawless face due to innumerable injections of Botox
  38. My cat, Oliver: Sir Oliver the Lilshed Crookshanks Milo Madden the III, Esquire (see the very bottom of this blog for a photo of his best work as a lilshed)
  39. Sleeping Beauty
  40. Modern interpretative dance performed by a charmingly precocious 4 year old whilst singing "Once Upon a Dream" for a quarter from her mom: best show I've seen in years
  41. One Life to Live
  42. David Ortiz's smile
  43. The fact that David Ortiz, a native Spanish speaker from the Dominican Republic, is easier to understand than Mayor Menino of Boston in those anti-violence PSAs aired on NESN.
  44. Microbrews, particularly Gritty's
  45. The color fuschia
  46. Sushi, especially spicy tuna
  47. Marden's and its snappy, straightforward slogan: "I shoulda bought it when I saw it at Mardens!"
  48. Lobster claws
  49. Cracking open a lobster claw and getting the white stuff splattered all over your hair, face, glasses and even getting a bit of a pearl necklace, lobster-style
  50. Irish jokes
  51. Soap Net
  52. Fresh Air with Terry Gross
  53. All shades of purple
  54. Ikea (I almost forgot that one!)
  55. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
  56. Bart and Greg's
  57. Little Homeys and other tiny toys that amuse people of all ages: when I taught "Romeo and Juliet" and "The Odyssey", classes met every other days so I had to revive their memories of what we'd studied the class before. I did it in three minutes at the beginning of class with "Little Homey Theatre." I took my little pencil case box of Little Homeys and other tiny toys with mermaids, animals, figurines, etc. and recreated the plot lines from the last class. It was fun. Plus, they remembered.
  58. The way the British spell theatre.

  70. Brain candy books: especially Bridget Jones but also Georgia Nicholson, Princess Mia, and Stephanie Plum, oh and Captain Underpants and Encyclopedia Brown
  71. Digital cameras, iPods, Razrs and other little gadgets that are fun
  72. Ben Harper
  73. Playing beer dye
  74. UMaine men's hockey games at the Alfond
